When embarking on your new kitchen, not only does it have to look good, but it’s got to be functional at the same time. The most important step is to plan your layout to ensure the space works for everyone, with the main aim to create a multifunctional, stress-free, beautiful space.

It can be difficult to decide the perfect layout for your kitchen but the best place to start is by determining its shape and size. The shape and size of your kitchen will affect the design and how many units you can have in which layout. Kitchens come in all shapes and sizes, but generally most fall into one of four categories; Galley, L-Shaped, U-Shaped or Island.

If you have a smaller space, then we’d recommend a galley style layout with long and narrow units down each side which will maximise storage and work surface space. Try placing your oven and sink on one side, with your fridge on the other to even it out. If you have a large open-plan living space, the L-Shape layout is a great option with units on two walls facing into the room. U-Shaped layouts are also popular for larger spaces with units lining three walls – there’s more than enough space to fit everything in.

If you’re looking to maximise your kitchen’s capacity, consider adding an island which is perfect for extra storage, extra preparation space and creating a sociable atmosphere with a breakfast bar.

There are three key factors to consider when planning your layout and assessing your space. Firstly, think about the space you have available. For example, there’s no point planning an island kitchen if you’re working with a long and thin space.

Secondly, it’s important to think about what you require from your kitchen; do you want it to be the central hub of your home where you and your family spend the majority of your time or is your kitchen’s purpose solely for preparing and cooking your meals? This will determine how you use your space and whether you make it an open-plan living area or keep it contained and minimalistic.

Finally, consider what theme you would like for your kitchen. Do you want a traditional, country-style kitchen or would you prefer a more modern, contemporary kitchen? Once you’ve decided you can chat with a designer to figure out how you can achieve your dream kitchen in the space you have available.

It’s important to use your space carefully when designing a kitchen in a small space, and there are a few helpful additions which can help utilise the space you have available ensuring that your kitchen is a place where meal preparation, socialising and all other aspects of your daily routine feel effortless.

Closets Unlimited offer various solutions to make the most out of small spaces. For example, skinny shelves and cupboards are ideal for small spaces as they allow you to make the most of your space. They’re especially useful for maximising the often-wasted spaces in corners or short walls and are great for storing anything from spices to dishware.

Also consider integrating accessories and appliances where possible – this ensures you aren’t wasting cupboard space on things that don’t necessarily need to be stored away. For example, an integrated chopping board.

As well as choosing clever storage options, the colours and design of your kitchen are also key. For example, handless cupboards will immediately create a sleek and uncluttered feel. A gloss finish helps to bounce light around the room to create the impression of a larger space and light colours also make your kitchen feel bigger.
